Iqbal Siddiquee: Discussants at a meeting in Sylhet demanded giving primary education in mother tongue for the adivashi (indigenous) children alongside the national curriculum to raise their literacy rate. Appointment of teachers from the ethnic minority groups can help to achieve the goal.
Ethnic Community Development Organisation (ECDO) organised the meeting and Professor Dr. Tulshi Kumar Das of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) readout the main paper on 'Adivashi children's Education in Mother tongue: Its Importance and Significance'. Addressing as chief guest, renowned educationist and writer Professor Dr. Muhammad Zafar Iqbal of the SUST said adivashi children should have their education in national curriculum alongside their mother tongue at the primary level. Sylhet district Bar Association president-EU Shahidul Islam moderated the discussion while professor Dr. Yasmin Haque of SUST, Manipuri academic AK Sheram, Sylhet Chamber of Commerce & Industry-Administrator Faruque Mahmud Chowdhury, district Primary Education Officer AKM Riaz Uddin, Dr. Abul Foteh Fattah, Adibashi teacher Khoirom Kamini Kumar Sinha, teachers-Abdul Quadir and Md. Maniruddin and Daily Uttar Purba Chief Editor Aziz Ahmed Selim also spoke on the occasion. ECDO's Executive Director chief Lakshmikanta Sinha chaired the meeting. |
