UN human rights chief sends mission to Honduras Print
Friday, 16 October 2009
GENEVA- The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, will deploy a mission to Honduras from 18 October to 7 November 2009. The UN team will compile the necessary information to prepare a special report requested by the Human Rights Council.

On 1 October 2009, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution requesting the High Commissioner to present a comprehensive report on the violations of human rights in Honduras since the coup d’état on 28 June 2009.

Pursuant to this resolution, the team will produce a report on the violations of human rights committed in Honduras since the coup d’état to the date of its departure. The High Commissioner will submit a comprehensive report to the 13th session of the Human Rights Council (March 2010).

In order to fulfill its mandate, the mission will seek the views of all parties in Honduras, and will do so in a manner that is consistent with General Assembly resolution 63/301 of 30 June 2009.

The team will make no statements to the media, nor will it issue a press release at the end of their stay in Honduras. All requests for public statements or interviews should be addressed to the Communication Section of OHCHR Headquarters.
